The Gulls have signed defenseman Brian Cooper to a one-year contract through the 2017-18 AHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deals were disclosed.
Cooper, 23 (11/1/93), has collected 4-7=11 points with a +4 rating and 14 penalty minutes (PIM) in 42 career AHL games with San Diego. The 5-10, 197-pound blueliner spent the majority of 2016-17 with the Gulls, earning 4-6=10 points with a +5 rating and 10 PIM in 37 games. He also appeared in all 10 Calder Cup Playoff games, recording two assists (0-2=2) to help San Diego to the Pacific Division Final. Cooper also earned one assist (0-1=1) in his one game with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL last season.
A native of Anchorage, Ala., Cooper made his professional debut with San Diego in 2015-16, collecting one assist (0-1=1) in five games. He also appeared in eight Calder Cup Playoff contests, earning one point (assist) with four PIM.
Selected by Anaheim in the fifth round (127th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Cooper played four seasons with Nebraska-Omaha of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (2012-13) and National Collegiate Hockey Conference (2013-16), recording 12-31=43 points with a +19 rating in 143 games. He was named NCHC Academic All-Conference team during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
