San Jose took the early lead at SAP Center in San Jose, CA on Wednesday, Oct. 21, with a goal by Barracuda captain Bryan Lerg at 5:11 of the first period. They scored again on a shorthanded goal by Scott Timmins just 13:29 later but the Gulls refused to enter the first intermission down 2-0.

Gulls defenseman Brandon Montour answered with a power play goal at 19:54 of the first period, bringing the deficit to one at the first break..

San Diego evened the score at 6:26 of the second period with the Gulls’ second power play goal of the night, this time coming from forward Harry Zolnierczyk. Defensemen Shea Theodore and Shane O’Brien each contributed to the goal, both recording helpers on the play.

Both teams traded opportunities in the final frame but ultimately went scoreless in the third period leading to a3-on-3 sudden death overtime period. With the extra time equally indecisive,  a three-man shootout would be required.

Gulls forwards Nick Ritchie and Stefan Noesen each scored in the shootout,  giving the Gulls the 3-2 victory. Gulls goalie John Gibson stopped 25 of 27 shots faced and went 2-for-2 in the shootout, stopping attempts by Bryan Lerg and Nikolay Goldobin.
