GAME PREVIEW: San Diego Looks to Even the Score Against Charlotte in Second of Back-to-Backs (7:05 p.m.)
The Gulls (17-13-0-1; 35 points) take on the Checkers (20-11-1-1; 42 points) in the second of back-to-back games after falling 3-1 to Charlotte last night at Valley View Casino Center.
In last night’s contest, the Checkers opened scoring with a power play goal by defenseman Jake Chelios at 15:45 of the first period after the Gulls’ Shane O’Brien sat for a slashing penalty.
Charlotte converted on the power play for the second time at just 1:02 into the second period with a goal from defenseman Mike Cornell. Forward Nick Ritchie scored the solo goal for the Gulls at 9:05 of the middle frame, cutting the Checkers lead to one.
The Gulls had 10 shots on goal in the final period but couldn’t find the back of the net again. San Diego pulled Khudobin from net in the final minutes of regulation, looking for the man advantage but opening an empty net opportunity which Charlotte’s Brown took advantage of to finalize the score at 3-1.
The Gulls and Checkers will meet three more times in the regular season (including tonight). After tonight’s matchup, the remaining two contests will be held at Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte, NC.
