GAME PREVIEW: San Diego Looks to Even Out the Score vs. Charlotte in Back-to-Back Games on the Road (4:00 p.m. PT)

The Gulls (21-19-1-1; 44 points) take on the Charlotte Checkers (25-18-2-2; 54 points) in the first of back-to-backs at Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte, NC after falling to Charlotte in both prior meetings at Valley View Casino Center.

On January 8, San Diego fell to Charlotte 3-1, outshooting them by one (30-29) in the effort. Checkers defensemen Jake Chelios and Mike Cornell netted goals for Charlotte prior to Gulls left wing Nick Ritchie scoring the single San Diego goal to come within one halfway through the second frame. Patrick Brown scored on the empty net to set the final score.

The next night (January 9), Charlotte claimed a 4-2 victory over the Gulls. Again, the Checkers opened scoring, this time a power play goal by left wing Zach Boychuk. San Diego center Mike Sgarbossa answered right back with a power play goal of his own just under seven minutes later to tie the game. The Gulls took the lead with Nick Ritchie’s goal at 12:51 of the opening frame and headed to the locker room up by one.  Charlotte came back swinging with three unanswered goals over the remaining two periods. Justin Shugg, T.J. Hensick and Brody Sutter (EN) each tallied goals in the Checkers win.

Following tonight’s matchup, both teams will meet again tomorrow. This weekend’s contests will be the final two meetings for the teams in the regular season. Puck drop for both games is set for 4 p.m. PT.
