GAME PREVIEW: Gulls Play In First Out-of-State Contest Tonight At Grand Rapids (4:00p.m. PST)

San Diego continues its current road-trip, facing the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings). San Diego is 9-4-0-1 (19 points) after losing to Stockton by a score of 4-0 on Wednesday night.

The Gulls and Griffins, 3-8-0-1 (7 points), have matched up once before this season, a contest at Valley View Casino Center and the Gulls’ Home Opener (Oct. 10). San Diego began their season with a win on a 4-2 victory over Grand Rapids in front of 12,920 fans.

Gulls rookie Nick Ritchie netted the Gulls’ first ever AHL goal and opened scoring 15 minutes into the first period on a power play. Defenseman Brandon Montour continued the Gulls scoring by netting another power play goal at 14:47 of the second period.

Griffins left wing Eric Tangradi scored the game’s third power play goal at 1:42 of the final frame to get Grand Rapids on the board. Ritchie tallied his second of the game, and third Gulls goal, five minutes later to stretch the lead to two. Colin Campbell kept the Griffins within striking distance by adding a goal at 12:44. With San Diego up by one, center Antoine Laganiere sealed the deal for the Gulls with an empty netter with 31 seconds left in the game.

Grand Rapids outshot San Diego, 34-30, over 60 minutes of play. Gulls goaltender John Gibson contributed a solid outing, saving 32 of the Griffins’ 34 shots.

Tonight will be the last regular-season meeting for San Diego and Grand Rapids.
