GAME PREVIEW: Gulls Face Barracuda for Second Game of Back-to-Backs After first Loss at Home (7:05 p.m.)
San Diego finishes off a three-game home stand and part two of back-to-backs vs. the San Jose Barracuda (AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks), tonight. The Gulls are 9-2-0-1 (19 points) after a 4-3 shootout loss to San Jose last night. The Gulls and Barracuda (4-6-0-1; 9 points) have met four times prior to tonight’s matchup at Valley View Casino Center.
Last night, the Gulls took the early lead with a goal by Nick Ritchie, his ninth of the season (team leader). The opening goal was followed shortly thereafter by a fight between Gulls forward Joseph Cramarossa and Barracuda defenseman Gus Young. San Diego converted on a power play as Chris Mueller’s shot went through the legs of San Jose goaltender Troy Grosenick, giving the Gulls a 2-0 lead.
San Diego, leading 2-0 at the end of the first period, traded opportunities with San Jose through the second frame before the Barracuda responded, shrinking San Diego’s lead to one with a goal by Barclay Goodrow. Forward Bryan Lerg netted San Jose’s second goal of the game, after the Gulls killed the penalty on a tripping call, tying the score at two.
The remainder of the second period and much of the third was scoreless prior to Nic Kerdiles netting his second of the season with 6:15 remaining in the third to put San Diego back up by one. San Jose came back, tying the game on a goal by Scott Timmins with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
After a missed penalty shot opportunity by Brandon Montour in overtime period, Jeremy Langlois scored the only goal in the shootout, giving the Barracuda the victory.
San Diego and San Jose will meet eight more times this season (including tonight). Three of these contests will be held at SAP Center in San Jose, CA, and five at Valley View Casino Center.
