GAME PREVIEW: Gulls’ Road Trip Continues as They Visit Heat for Fourth Time This Season (7:30 p.m.)
The Gulls round out their two-game road trip at Stockton, tonight. San Diego is coming off of a 6-4 loss to the Bakersfield Condors, bringing their record to 11-8-0-1 for a total of 23 points on the season. The Heat (AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames) enter tonight’s contest with a 6-8-0-2 record for a total of 14 points.
San Diego is 2-1 against the Heat so far this season. Their last meeting was Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Stockton Arena in Stockton, CA, a 4-0 Heat victory.
This last meeting opened with an aggressive 15 minutes from both teams. An unfortunate turnover led to a first period, 1-0 lead for the Heat with a goal coming at 17:58 by center Derek Grant.
Gulls goalie John Gibson faced 16 shots and two penalty kills during the second period alone, but held the Heat’s lead to one as the teams entered the final frame.
A string of unfortunate events ensued in the third period including an own goal caused by an unlucky deflection and an empty netter. Gulls head coach Dallas Eakins pulled Gibson from goal with 4:48 remaining but the Gulls were unable to get one past Heat’s goaltender Kevin Poulin. Stockton got the final tally nine seconds before the end of the period, ending in a 4-0 Gulls loss.
San Diego and Stockton meet for the fourth time tonight. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. Both teams will face each other nine more times this season (including tonight). Four of these contests will be held at Valley View Casino Center and five will be held at Stockton Arena.
