SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls downed the San Jose Barracuda in their third win at SAP Center this season, improving their record to 8-2-0-0 for a total of 16 points.
Gulls center Michael Sgarbossa opened scoring at 8:15 of the first period on a rebound off the left pad of Barracuda goaltender Troy Grosenick, his first goal, seventh point, of the season. Brandon Montour, who leads the team in assists, added the helper, his seventh in 10 games, while Harry Zolnierczyk recorded the second assist. Brian McGrattan and Frazer McLaren dropped mitts just 3:09 later, McGrattan’s second fight in the last two games.
With 33 seconds left in the first frame, Sgarbossa notched his second goal of the game, assisted by Gulls scoring leader Nick Ritchie (8-2=10) for his 10th point of the season.
After a mostly quiet second period, Gulls right wing Brian McGrattan was sent to the box for four minutes, two for goaltender interference and two for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Gulls killed the entire four minutes of penalties but Barracuda forward Barclays Goodrow connected for his first goal of the season after the penalties ended, bringing San Jose within one as the two teams headed into the third period.
Grosenick robbed Gulls right wing Stefan Noesen with a glove save near the 10 minute mark of the final period. After video review of the play, the puck was confirmed to have not crossed the goal line.
With 7:41 left in the game, Barracuda forward Nikita Jevpalovs notched his second goal of the season, with assists from John McCarthy and Joakim Ryan, tying the game at two.
Joseph Cramarossa received a pass from Antoine Laganiere just inside the blue line and netted his first goal of the season, giving San Diego a 3-2 lead with 5:04 remaining in regulation and ultimately the victory.
San Diego returns home for Military Appreciation Week with games vs. the Bakersfield Condors (Wednesday, Nov. 11) and San Jose Barracuda (Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14) at Valley View Casino Center.
