GULLS TAKE ON HEAT FOR GAME TWO OF BACK-TO-BACKS TONIGHT

October 31, 2015

GAME PREVIEW: Gulls Take on Heat for Game Two of Back-to-Backs Tonight, 5:35 p.m.

The Gulls return to Valley View Casino Center for round two of back-to-back contests vs. the Stockton Heat. The Gulls downed Stockton last night (Oct. 30) in a 3-2 shootout victory, bringing their record to 5-1-0-0 for a total of 10 points on the season. The Heat enter tonight’s game with a 2-2-0-1 record for a total of five points.

Last night’s game was the first of 12 meetings this season between the Gulls and Heat. Both teams traded opportunities early in the first period last night, prior to San Diego getting into penalty trouble, which sent multiples players to the box and put the Gulls on the five-on-three penalty fill for two minutes and a five-on-four penalty kill for an additional two minutes. The Gulls survived both kills and the first period ended scoreless.

Gulls forward Nick Ritchie opened scoring in the second period with a power play goal (San Diego’s sixth power play goal of the season), assisted by defenseman Brandon Montour and forward Max Friberg. The Heat tied it up by netting a shorthanded goal by left winger Bryce Van Brabant. Gulls forward Max Friberg answered back, again on the power play, just 28 seconds later, with Antoine Laganiere collecting the assist.

The Gulls made a goalie change to start the third period, replacing starter John Gibson with backup Matt Hackett. With just over four minutes left in the final frame, Stockton forward Bill Arnold tallied a goal for the Heat to even the score and send the game into three-on-three sudden death overtime.

With no decision made in the five minute frame, the Gulls and Heat headed to shootout. Gulls forwards Mike Sgarbossa scored in the fourth round of the shootout and goaltender Matt Hackett stopped four-of-four attempts faced, giving the Gulls the 3-2 victory.

San Diego and Stockton meet for the second time tonight. Puck drop is set for 5:35p.m. Both teams will meet 11 more times this season (including tonight). Five of these contests will be held at Valley View Casino Center and six will be held at Stockton Arena in Stockton, CA.
