Game Preview: Gulls Wrap Up 3-Game Road Trip at Bakersfield, Tonight (7:00 p.m.)
The Gulls wrap up their three-game road trip tonight against the Bakersfield Condors at Rabobank Arena. San Diego is coming off of a shutout victory against the San Jose Barracuda, last night at SAP Center, and a four-game win streak to start the season (4-0-0-0; 8 points). The Condors (1-3-0-1; 3 points) dropped their Friday Night contest on the road at Ontario, a 5-4 loss.
The Gulls and Condors last met on October 16 at Valley View Casino Center. San Diego took an early lead with a goal by forward Nick Ritchie just 23 seconds into the first period but Bakersfield quickly answered back, netting three consecutive goals in the first frame.
Gulls forward Max Friberg scored with a 1:36 left in the first, followed by a goal by Ondrej Kase just 17 seconds later to tie the game at three apiece.
Bakersfield opened scoring in the second with a power play goal by Matthew Ford 42 seconds into the period. Condors captain Ryan Hamilton stretched the Gulls deficit to two with a goal at the three minute mark but Gulls forward Antoine Laganiere brought San Diego back within one with a goal at 9:44, followed by Harry Zolnierczyk’s tying tally at 15:57.
Neither San Diego nor Bakersfield could put one in during the final regulation period or in the five minutes of 3-on-3 sudden death overtime, forcing a shootout decision.
Gulls forward Ondrej Kase notched San Diego’s first attempt and Gulls goalie John Gibson went 3-for-3, stopping attempts by Iiro Pakarinen, Andrew Miller and Leon Draisaitl, and giving the Gulls the 6-5 victory.
San Diego and Bakersfield will meet 11 more times this season (including tonight) – six of those at Rabobank Arena and five at Valley View Casino Center.
