The Gulls defeated the Tucson Roadrunners in a shootout with a 3-2 win tonight at Valley View Casino Center. Kevin Boyle made a season-high 36 saves in regulation and overtime, and stopped two-of-three shootout attempts to earn his second consecutive win.
The Gulls erased a 1-0 third period deficit to improved to 13-1-0-1 against the Roadrunners all-time, including 3-0-0 this season. Defenseman Andy Welinski and Spencer Abbott tallied goals, while Kalle Kossila netted the shootout winner in the final round to seal the victory for San Diego.
Lawson Crouse deflected Kyle Capobianco’s point shot 6:19 into the game on the power play to give Tucson in early lead. After a scoreless middle frame, Welinski scored his sixth goal of the season at 13:01 of the third period to tie the game at 1-1. Welinski’s six goals co-lead AHL defensemen and his 15 points ranks second among AHL blueliners.
Moments later, Abbott broke the deadlock to give the Gulls a 2-1 lead at 10:43 of the final frame. The veteran forward’s goal extended his point streak to four games (3-4=7) dating back to Nov. 4. The point streak matches his season high of four games set from Oct. 21-28 (2-4=6).
Lane Peterson spoiled the game late when he scored a power play goal with 1:34 remaining to force overtime and a back-and-forth 3-on-3 extra session that saw both goaltenders force a shootout.
It was Boyle (5-4-1-0) who came out victorious when he stopped both Peterson and Dylan Strome, the Arizona Coyotes third overall selection of the 2015 NHL Draft. Abbott scored his shootout attempt after Giovanni Fiore couldn’t convert, and Kossila cooly found the back of the net for the win, San Diego’s first back-to-back wins this season.
Tonight marked the second comeback win of the season for the Gulls, who erased a 1-0 third period deficit. San Diego’s other comeback win came in a 7-6 victory in the season opener after they erased 2-0 and 3-2 leads.
The Gulls will visit the Roadrunners for a quick one-game road trip on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Tucson Arena (6:05 p.m.).
