The Gulls announced today that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has signed left wing Jordan Samuels-Thomas to a two-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Samuels-Thomas, 27 (5/28/90), collected 12-12=24 points with 17 penalty minutes (PIM) and a +13 rating in 56 games with San Diego last season. The 6-4, 210-pound forward also scored one goal (1-0=1) with two PIM in 10 Calder Cup Playoff appearances with the Gulls. He set AHL career highs in several offensive categories in 2016-17, including assists, points and plus/minus, while matching his career high in goals. Samuels-Thomas was also named San Diego’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the San Diego community during the 2016-17 season.
Prior to signing a one-year contract with the Gulls on Nov. 25, 2016, Samuels-Thomas collected 3-5=8 points in nine contests split between the Florida Everblades and Utah Grizzlies of the (ECHL) last season.
Originally selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the seventh round (203rd overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Samuels-Thomas has earned 27-27=54 points with 133 PIM and a +7 rating in 177 career AHL contests with San Diego (2016-present), Ontario (2015-16) and Rochester (2014-15). The West Hartford, Conn. native also played two seasons with Quinnipiac University in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (2012-14) where he collected 30-28=58 points 86 PIM and a +26 rating in 77 games, helping lead Quinnipiac to the NCAA National Championship Game in 2013. He also spent two seasons with Bowling Green University of the Western College Hockey Association (2009-11), earning 20-26=46 points with 76 PIM in 71 games.
