GAME PREVIEW: The Gulls Come Off First Victory Over Texas Going into Tonight’s Matchup (5:00p.m. PT)

San Diego and Texas meet for the fifth of six meetings this season, tonight at Cedar Park Center in Cedar Park, TX. The Stars lead the season series between the two clubs, 3-1. The Gulls were yet to top Texas until last night’s matchup where they walked away with a 3-2 victory.

In the matchup, Texas winger Curtis McKenzie opened scoring at 5:02 on a power play opportunity after Nick Ritchie was sent to the box for slashing. Texas held the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first frame, but San Diego headed to the locker room leading shots by one (9-8).

Gulls center Mike Sgarbossa netted San Diego’s first goal 6 minutes and fifty-seven seconds into the second period to even the score. Harry Zolnierczyk grabbed the lead for the Gulls with his fourth goal of the season, and first since returning to the lineup from an injury just one game prior, a power play goal at 11:41.

The Stars tied the game with their second goal, a tally by right wing Matej Stransky at 16:45 of the final frame. The Gulls were quick to answer back and with just two minutes and thirty-three seconds left in regulation, Stefan Noesen notched the game winning goal for San Diego.

San Diego held Texas to just 21 shots, while goalie Matt Hackett stopped 19 of those shots faced.

Entering this evening’s faceoff, the Gulls are 19-16-1-1 (40 points). The Stars have a season record of 21-16-3-3 (48 points). Both teams will meet just once more in the regular season after tonight’s matchup; a contest in San Diego on February 17.
