The Gulls have signed defenseman Jeff Schultz to a one-year contract through the 2017-18 season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deals were disclosed.
Schultz, 31 (2/25/86), posted 0-15=15 points with a +6 rating and 18 penalty minutes (PIM) in 65 games with San Diego last season. He has also added one assist (0-1=1) and two PIM in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games. The 6-6, 225-pound defenseman has scored 11-65=76 points with a +78 rating and 137 PIM in 409 career NHL games with Washington (2006-13) and Los Angeles (2013-16). He has also made six trips to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Capitals and Kings, earning one assist (0-1=1) and 14 PIM in 36 contests. He won the Stanley Cup with Los Angeles in 2014.
In 2009-10, the Calgary, Alberta native became the first Washington player to lead the NHL in plus/minus with a +50 rating. He also recorded career highs in points (3-20=23), assists and games played in the same season with the Capitals.
Selected by Washington in the first round (27th overall) of the 2004 NHL Draft, Schultz has collected 10-64=74 points with a +71 rating and 143 PIM in 295 career AHL games. He has also made 65 career Calder Cup Playoff appearances, earning 2-11=13 points with 38 PIM, helping the Manchester Monarchs to a Calder Cup Championship in 2015 and the Hershey Bears in 2006.
