Sunday funday wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be for the San Diego Gulls as they couldn’t wrangle up a win over the Calgary Wranglers, dropping a tough 8-4 decision at Pechanga Arena San Diego.

Sunday’s game saw Glenn Gawdin pick up right where he left off in his fiery play against Calgary as it was the first of a hat trick for the center.

At 6:53 in the opening frame, Gawdin kickstarted the action with an unassisted short-handed goal.

Calgary pulled it even at 8:05 as Mitch McLain got the Wranglers on the board. A minute later, a goal from Ilya Solovyov allowed Calgary to grab the lead.

Gawdin wouldn’t let that last for long, striking on the power play with his second goal of the frame to tie things up at 9:40.

In the middle frame, McLain struck first for the Wranglers to take back the lead at 7:12.

At 17:19, McLain hit the net for a third time, extending their advantage to two goals. Minutes later, Solovyov added his second goal of the night.

Less than a minute into the final frame, the Gulls went to work on cutting back that lead, powered by a  Gawdin completing the hatty. It marks the third hat trick of the season for the Gulls and the 12th in the team’s AHL history.

The Wranglers didn’t hold back on stretching their lead, Jakob Pelltetier and Jeremie Poirier each scoring in the third.

At 8:45, Nathan Gaucher punched back, unloading his ninth goal of the season to extend his goal streak to three consecutive games.

Calgary’s Adam Klapka scored the final goal of the night, an empty-netter at 17:47.

Trevor Carrick tallied two assists on the night. Andrew Agozzino, Chase De Leo, Nikita Nesterenko, and Sasha Pastujov each picked up a helper.

The Gulls will look for a rebound on home ice on Wednesday, Mar. 27 against the Bakersfield Condors at Pechanga Arena San Diego for the penultimate contest of their season series (7 p.m. PST).
