The San Diego Gulls are set for their second matchup with the Abbotsford Canucks tonight as they return to Pechanga Arena San Diego following the holiday break (5 p.m. PT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).

The teams last met up over a month ago on Nov. 15 when San Diego shutout Abbotsford 7-0. Goaltender Ville Husso made history that night, tying the Gulls AHL record for total shutouts with the franchise as well as the record for most shutouts in a single season in Gulls AHL history. The game marked San Diego’s highest scoring game of the season and still holds that title.

"Abbotsford has changed a lot since we last saw them, it’s gonna be a much different opponent," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "They’re running pretty hot right now so we’ll get as much rest as we possibly can and get ready to get geared up and do it again."

Abbotsford took on the Coachella Valley Firebirds last night, falling in overtime 3-2. The Canucks remain in the 10th place spot of the competitive Pacific Division with an 8-15-3-3 record. San Diego faced off with the Bakersfield Condors last night, winning 5-2. The Gulls stand in the seventh-place spot with a 12-8-6-1 record. The team holds 31 points, only 8 points behind the division leading Colorado Eagles.

Last night, the Gulls put up three goals in the first period alone with Ryan Carpenter, Jan Mysak, and Justin Bailey all finding the net. Stian Solberg and Nico Myatovic also netted a goal each to increase the Gulls scoring to five. Husso showed his dominance in the net once again, saving 19 shots to log his seventh win this season.

"That's a team that's scored a lot of goals this year," Bailey said. "I think for us, going into the break, we've been playing a lot of good hockey here for the last bit. We want to see the results. Obviously like I said, that's a team that scores a lot of goals, so coming out of the break, it was kind of imperative for us to get this first win and then do what we do on home ice tomorrow."

San Diego will play next as they ring in the new year on Wednesday, Dec. 31 against the Tucson Roadrunners at the Tucson Convention Center (5 p.m. PT).
