The San Diego Gulls look to defeat the Abbotsford Canucks tonight in game two of their series this week at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PST).
San Diego fell to Abbotsford on Wednesday, 5-3. In the teams’ two prior meetings this season the Gulls shutout the Canucks. Despite the Gulls getting on the board first and consistently responding, it was not enough to take the win in the end.
Abbotsford now holds a three-game winning streak with a record of 12-19-3-3. While they remain in the 10th place spot in the Pacific Division, the team is now only seven points behind the 8th and 9th place teams with 30 logged. San Diego now holds the lone spot in seventh place, posting a 15-11-6-2 record with 38 points. The Gulls are on a two-game losing streak that they look to break tonight.
In Wednesday’s game, the Gulls outshot the Canucks posting 39 shots compared to the Canucks 24. Calle Clang was between the pipes, saving 19 of the 23 shots against him. Sam Colangelo netted the first goal of the night on a powerplay, giving him his seventh goal of the season and 3-7=10 points in his past nine games. Yegor Sidorov was next, tying the game back up in the second period and recording his eighth goal and 17th point. Defenseman Roland McKeown found the last Gulls goal, giving him three goals on the season and once again tying the game up.
"I don't think stylistically or style of play there's massive adjustments that are needed," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "I think there's some small things and details that we should certainly explore, but there's a lot of good in this game. Unfortunately, at the end, we end up on the wrong side, but there's easily correctable things to be able to fix."
The Gulls will get right back at it tomorrow night as they face off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PST).
