The San Diego Gulls will play their second game of a back-to-back home series tonight as they take on the Abbotsford Canucks for the first time this season at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
Abbotsford sits in the ninth-place spot in the Pacific Division with a current record of 3-9-0-2 (8 points). The team has suffered a multitude of injuries since the start of the season while also losing a fair number of players to the NHL. The Gulls are tied at seventh place with a record of 5-4-3-0 (13 points). San Diego’s matchup last night gave the team their first overtime win of the season in a late rally over the Bakersfield Condors, 4-3.
"Just from my experience last year, they were a really hard team to play against," Ryan Carpenter said. "Whether they had all their guys in their lineup or there were times we played them that they were missing guys to injury or to call ups, and they were a hard team to place. That's what we expect."
In last night’s game, Tim Washe found the back of the net for the seventh time this season to put the Gulls on the board. The rookie is tied at first place for AHL goals scored by a rookie and leads all Gulls skaters in goals. Justin Bailey also buried a goal which tied the game in the third period. Sam Colangelo made his return to San Diego after spending the first part of the season with Anaheim. Colangelo tied the game back up in the final second of the third period, making his return memorable. Bailey then buried his second of the game and third game-winning goal of the season in overtime to take the victory. Ville Husso made his 10th appearance in net this season, stopping 28 of 31 shots.
Sasha Pastujov and Roland McKeown both picked up two assists, giving them each three points in two back-to-back games. Tristan Luneau and Stian Solberg brought their assist records up to three for the season while Carpenter brought his to five.
"Tomorrow we’ll have meetings, and the coaches will prepare us," Carpenter said last night. "Hopefully we can carry some of this momentum and some of this energy and confidence into tomorrow."
San Diego’s next game is on Wednesday Nov. 21 at Pechanga Arena San Diego where the team will look to take down the San Jose Barracuda for the second time this season (7 p.m. PT).
