The San Diego Gulls took back-to-back wins this weekend as they shutout the Abbotsford Canucks for the second time this season at Pechanga Arena San Diego tonight, 3-0.
It was a huge night for goaltender Calle Clang as he recorded his first AHL career shutout. He saved a total of 15 shots and extended his record for the season to 5-1-2.
"Oh, it's an unbelievable feeling," Clang said. "Took a while to get the first one, but, I mean, just makes it sweeter and I'm so proud of our team effort today. I think we played unbelievably from start to finish. Just really proud of the guys."
Following a scoreless 32 minutes, Tim Washe found the back of the net with a powerplay goal to put the Gulls on the board. With 12 goals in 28 games, the rookie now leads all Gulls skaters in both goals and total points with 12-12=24.
Judd Caulfield logged a goal off his backhand after passing three Canucks skaters. The goal brought his season total to 10, just one short of his total scoring last season. Noah Warren’s assist on the goal raised his assist count to five, beating his record of four which he logged last season.
Sam Colangelo found an empty netter to lock down the win. This gave Colangelo a two-point night, following his assist on Washe’s goal. He has now started a three-game point streak with 2-2=4 points recorded.
San Diego outshot Abbotsford consistently throughout the night, totaling 42 shots. The Gulls’ defense was strong tonight as they held the Canucks to a new low for the period with only two shots put on in the middle frame.
"The biggest thing [our defense] did was end plays early," Washe said. "They didn't let the other team set up at all tonight. They were all over them, and then when they got the puck, they were moving up to the forwards and made our jobs really easy. We just were playing simple, getting the red and winning our battles in the o-zone."
The Gulls will play their next contest against the Tucson Roadrunners in a New Year’s Eve special on December 31 at Tucson Convention Center (5 p.m. PT).
