The San Diego Gulls shut out the Abbotsford Canucks tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 7-0. This marks the Gulls’ highest scoring game of the season and first set of back-to-back wins.
Goaltender Ville Husso took the net tonight, recording his third shutout of the season, fifth with the Gulls, and 18th career total. Husso’s five shutouts with San Diego ties the Gulls AHL record for total shutouts with the franchise. It also ties the record for most shutouts in a single season in Gulls AHL history.
"I feel it's everybody in this organization, from coaches to the players and staff, it’s just good atmosphere to come to the rink," Husso said on his success. "It's fun. We get better every day. Just a good, good fit for me. Just gotta enjoy it and at the same time work hard. Like I said, it's been a lot of fun, and I just got to keep building."
The scoring started early as Justin Bailey scored shorthanded on a breakaway, only five minutes into the first frame to put the Gulls on the board first. This marked the fourth game-winning goal in a row for the right winger.
San Diego’s lead increased as Judd Caulfield found the net for the fifth time this season. Yegor Sidorov picked up his fifth assist and Tyson Hinds picked up his first, which also marks the defenseman’s first point of the season.
Five minutes later Caulfield netted his second of the night, marking his first AHL career multi-goal game. Nathan Gaucher logged his first assist and second point of the season while Nikolas Brouillard picked up his fifth assist and sixth point.
The action continued into the second period as Ryan Carpenter poked one in to give San Diego a 4-0 lead. Hinds recorded his second assist of the night, which marks his fourth AHL career multi-point game.
Sam Colangelo made the score 5-0 with a slap shot, logging his second goal in his second game back with San Diego. Matthew Phillips logged his first assist of the night while Brouillard logged his second. Brouillard is now one point away from becoming the first Gulls defenseman in franchise history to log 100 points with the team.
The Gulls matched their season-high scoring record at six when Sasha Pastujov fired one into the net. Phillips delivered the puck marking his fourth multi-point night of the season, increasing his total point record to 3-12=15. Tim Washe also got a piece, giving the rookie eight points in six games (4-4=8).
That record was broken when Bailey found his second goal of the night, bringing the score to 7-0. Bailey has now logged seven goals in his last seven games. Jan Mysak and Roland McKeown were both able to pick up their first points of the night as the assists.
"It definitely feels good," Brouillard said. "We started the season and thought we were playing good, we were playing hard, we were having some really good chances, some really good looks, and we just couldn't find the back of the net. We were losing those games by one goal or in overtime and it was just that scoring touch that was missing. We just believed in ourselves, and we stuck with it, and for the past couple games it's just been rolling. I think that in a season; it's always like that. You’re going to have hard times where you're gonna have trouble putting the puck in. Unfortunately, it happened at the beginning of the season, but now we're rolling, and it's just a big boost of confidence for our group."
The Gulls look to win a third in a row on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Pechanga Arena San Diego where they will play the San Jose Barracuda for the second time this season (7 p.m. PT).
