The San Diego Gulls will take on the Bakersfield Condors for the first time this season tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
"We’re happy to see the rest of the division and what they have to offer," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "We’re certain that they’re good hockey teams. The Pacific Division is deep every single year, so like always, we’ll stay focused on ourselves."
The Condors currently sit seventh in the Pacific Division with a record of 5-5-2-0. San Diego’s record is similar, at 4-4-3-0 with one less game played. Bakersfield's last game was a loss against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the team San Diego shutout 5-0 to open the season.
The Gulls’ last game was played on Saturday, Nov. 8, against the Ontario Reign at Toyota Arena. The game resulted in a 4-3 overtime loss following San Diego’s 6-3 victory over the Reign the previous night.
San Diego was able to cut down a three-goal deficit with a goal by Jan Mysak with the help of Sasha Pastujov and Roland McKeown to start the second period. Defenseman Noah Warren followed close behind, netting his first career AHL goal. The goal went unassisted and brought his total point count to 1-3=4, which matches his total points last season. The game was tied by rookie Tim Washe with only 91 seconds left in regulation. Veteran players Matthew Phillips and Ryan Carpenter helped on the goal.
Both Calle Clang and Ville Husso guarded the net for the night, with Husso taking over in the second period. Clang saved nine shots for San Diego while Husso saved eight, along with a penalty shot which marked the sixth of his career and left him with a perfect 6-for-6 record.
Despite Saturday night's loss, San Diego has taken five points in their last six games.
"We’re sticking to the process," Nikolas Brouillard said. "We knew we had a good ride from the back and the results ended up going our way. We just stuck to the process and that last week showed what a resilient group we can be, how hard we can play, and how tough it is to play against us. We just got to keep going into those next two games this weekend."
The Gulls will see another new opponent tomorrow night when they match up with the Abbotsford Canucks at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PST).
