The San Diego Gulls will return from the All-Star break tonight at Dignity Health Arena for the first matchup of a home-and-home series against the Bakersfield Condors (7 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
Forward Tim Washe and Goaltender Calle Clang represented the Gulls at the AHL All-Star Classic this past week. Both players helped lead the Pacific Division to their third AHL All-Star Challenge victory in the last four years. Clang was rewarded with CCM Top Goaltender honors during the AHL Skills Competition as he stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced.
Coming off the break, the Gulls hold the sixth-place spot in the Pacific Division with a 21-14-6-3 record and 51 points. There will be 28 games remaining in the regular season for San Diego, each one being essential to hold down a playoff spot.
"I think we've kind of broken this season up into thirds, and now we're kind of closer into that home stretch," Matthew Phillips said. "But we're really excited, and we think our game's trending in the right way so everyone's going to be ready to get back at it."
Bakersfield enters the night in the third-place spot, holding a 29-10-2-3 record with 63 points. The Condors are coming off back-to-back losses as they dropped two games to the division-leading Ontario Reign right before the break.
The last time the Gulls and Condors met was Dec. 27, when the Gulls took a 5-2 win at Dignity Health Arena. San Diego is 2-0-0-0 over Bakersfield this season with a victory on the road and at home. The Gulls look to continue that success tonight and tomorrow.
Prior to the break, the Gulls scored three victories in a row with their final one being on Feb. 4 over the Henderson Silver Knights, 7-4. The team had no problem producing offensively as they totaled 15 goals over the course of the three games. Judd Caulfield totaled the most points over the three-game winning-steak with 2-3=5. Yegor Sidorov and Nathan Gaucher followed close being with four points each. Sidorov found himself three goals and an assist while Gaucher totaled three assists and a goal. Justin Bailey and Matthew Phillips also found success over the course of these games, logging 1-2=3 points each.
"Our team is so deep, we really have an emphasis on defending," Bailey said. "You look at us, we've played a lot of tight games. I think that's one thing for us going forward, we didn't want to give up those quick ones at the end of the second, but like you've seen in the last two, three, four games where they’re tie games in the third, and that's anybody's game. Going to the playoffs and going down the stretch of the year, the games get tight. So obviously, for myself, Sasha [Pastujov], [Matthew] Phillips, [Yegor] Sidorov’s been hot. We got a lot of guys chipping in and we have a team where any given night, anybody can go off. That's kind of what you’ve been seeing lately."
Tomorrow night San Diego and Bakersfield will head over to Pechanga Arena San Diego to finish the series out (6 p.m. PST).
