The San Diego Gulls and Bakersfield Condors will finish out their home-and-home series tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
San Diego and Bakersfield battled it out last night at Dignity Health Arena with the Gulls taking the victory, 3-1. San Diego now holds a four-game winning streak, the longest this season. The team holds a 22-14-6-3 record with 53 points, holding down the sixth place Pacific Division spot. The Condors remain in third place in the Pacific Division going into tonight, possessing only four more points than the Gulls.
"These are hard," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "It’s a huge challenge mentally, especially playing against a team like Bakersfield that’s got so much high-octane offense. So, it’s a challenge, but the guys stepped up and I think there’s a lot to be proud of."
Last night Tomas Suchanek was impressive in net as he logged his second win of the season and held one of the top offensive teams in the division to only one goal. It was a notable night for Sasha Pastujov as he logged his 100th career AHL point with an assist. Matthew Phillips found his 10th goal of the season while Tim Washe found his 14th. Nico Myatovic and Tristan Luneau each tallied an assist to contribute to the Gulls scoring.
Special teams also contributed to San Diego’s success last night as they were perfect in all aspects. Phillips found his goal on the teams only powerplay and the Gulls defense shined as they went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
"It’s been something we’ve been working on the whole season, really learning how to win,”\" McIlvane said. "The kind of decisions that it takes throughout the game but really protecting the lead in the third period. There’s this blend where you don’t want to sit back, you want to keep attacking as much as you can, but you also want to play as smart as you can. I think we did a lot of good things."
San Diego is 4-5-2-1 in second games of back-to-back series and 10-8-2-3 at home. The team looks to improve both records tonight and hopefully extend their winning streak to five games. The Gulls have won three of their last five home games and picked up points in four of those five, proving their abilities on home ice.
San Diego will next face the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday Feb. 18 at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PST).
