The San Diego Gulls kept their momentum going as they defeated the Bakersfield Condors tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 6-3
The second period saw the most goals the Gulls have put up in a single period this season with five. That record sits one shy of the Gulls AHL record for most goals in a single period which was six scored back in 2017.
Bakersfield put up two back-to-back goals to start the middle frame, but that lead did not last long. Ryan Carpenter cut the lead in half at 5:12 as he found the back of the net on the power play. Carpenter has found 17 goals this season, seven of those being on the power play which co-leads Gulls skaters in power play goals this season. 13 seconds later, Cal Burke put one through for the fourth time this season. Burke has logged 3-3=6 points in his past six contests, the most offensive production he’s seen this year.
"I think it just shows the belief in this room that when we're down, we're never out of it," Carpenter said. "It felt like even they got a little bit of momentum, maybe in the third off of that shorthanded goal. It felt like it was maybe a tough bounce, but they executed well. There was just a lot of belief and a lot of execution in this room."
Justin Bailey had himself a night as he recorded his third multi-goal game of the season. His first was found when he put a slap shot through on the power play to give the Gulls their first lead of the night. Bailey stayed hot as he found his second shorthanded straight out the penalty box. The forward leads all Gulls skaters in goals this season with 22 and has tallied a season total of 22-16=38 points, beating out his total logged last season.
"I think I'm just playing with speed, playing with pace," Bailey said. "Our whole team was playing with a lot of speed. I was able to settle that one down for the first one, and great pass from [Ryan] Carpenter on the second one just to find me on the breakaway."
The fifth goal of the period was netted by the Gulls leading point scorer Sasha Pastujov. The goal marked his 19th of the season, 51st point of the season, and second point of the night. The forward has tallied 6-7=13 points in his past 10 contests.
Matthew Phillips kept it going in the third, finding the back of the net for the 13th time this season. Phillips ranks second amongst all Gulls skaters in points with 13-33=46 found this year. Tonight marks Phillips’ 13th multi-point night this year as he picked up an assist earlier in the game.
The crease was protected by Calle Clang who found his second straight win. Clang stopped 22-of-25 shots to ensure his 16th win of the season.
Roger McQueen found his first career AHL point in his AHL debut tonight as he was credited the primary assist on Phillips’ goal.
"Well, you see all the talent," assistant coach Michael Babcock said. "He's a big body and can really, really skate, has good hands and is tight so you see all the potential that's there. In terms of his first program, I thought he was really good. So, all we can ask for in regard to that, and he's only going to get better. So, looking forward to coaching him."
Sam Colangelo and Ryan Carpenter tallied a pair of assists each while Nico Myatovic, Stian Solberg, and Tyson Hinds picked up one each.
San Diego looks to make it three straight wins as they next travel to San Jose to take on the Barracuda on Tuesday, April 7 at Tech CU Arena (1 p.m. PDT).
