The San Diego Gulls defeated the Bakersfield Condors tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego after tying the game in the final second to then secure an overtime win, 4-3.
"I've never been on a team that has this much resiliency," Justin Bailey said. "There's no panic when we're down two, down three. It's happened multiple times this season. Obviously, you want to be up in the game. You don't want to be clawing your way back, but it's a game with a lot of good players. It's pro hockey, so just the ability to have no panic, continue to trust in what we're doing even if it takes to the last three seconds. Super resilient group, and that's something you really want to have."
The first period was a back-and-forth run of chances by both teams, but neither could net the puck leaving the game scoreless.
Bakersfield opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal five minutes into the second period. The lead increased to 2-0 after a power play goal.
San Diego responded late in the second frame, with Tim Washe tipping the puck in to cut the lead in half. This marks the rookie’s seventh goal, tying him at first place for AHL goals by a rookie and third in points. Defensemen Tristan Luneau and Stian Solberg helped deliver the puck, giving them three assists each for the season.
Bailey tied the game on a one timer six and a half minutes into the third period. Roland McKeown picked up his fourth assist and Sasha Pastujov picked up his sixth, marking assists in back-to-back games for both skaters.
After spending the beginning of the season in Anaheim, Sam Colangelo appeared in his first game back with the Gulls tonight and made it memorable. Colangelo scored the game-tying goal with one second remaining in the final frame, sending it to overtime. Pastujov picked up his second assist of the night and Ryan Carpenter picked up his first.
It did not take long for McKeown to deliver the puck to Bailey to bury one and take the victory. This gives Bailey his third game-winning goal and first two-goal game of the season, along with San Diego’s first overtime win of the season
"Sammy's goal and his celebration, I'm sure that's what fans are hoping for when they come to a game like this," Carpenter said. "It was nice to reward them and then Bailey makes a huge play, coming all the way down and going five hole in the goalie. He had two big ones tonight for us, it’s nice to see him heating up. He’s a big part of our team, so it's nice to get that scoring that maybe earlier in the year we weren't giving our goalies and our defense help that way."
The Gulls look to continue this momentum in game two of the back-to-back home series tomorrow night at Pechanga Arena San Diego against the Abbotsford Canucks (6 p.m. PT).
