The San Diego Gulls are set for their second matchup of the season with the Calgary Wranglers tonight at Scotiabank Saddledome (6 p.m. PT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
San Diego and Calgary last met on November 22 at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The Gulls fell just short as the Wranglers took the 3-2 win. San Diego’s record currently stands at 10-7-6-1 with 27 points while Calgary’s stands at 13-10-4-1 with 31 points.
The Gulls have struggled recently with offensive production, netting only two goals in their past two games. Despite consistently putting up high numbers of shots on goal, the team just hasn’t had the puck luck they need. The team has also consistently struggled on the powerplay. San Diego is 0-14 on powerplay goals in their last four games, ranking them 26th overall in the league with a 14.9% success rate.
"We'll get some offensive looks in our practice and see if we can get the guys feeling good about a couple things," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "We're playing against a team that is physical and gritty, and we'll be ready for that fight, but we'll look for opportunities to get better in practice."
The Gulls last competed on Wednesday, when they were shutout by the Henderson Silver Knights, 1-0. Despite the loss, Calle Clang made his fourth start in a row where he allowed only one goal, the fourth goaltender in Gulls AHL history to post a streak of four games allowing one goal or fewer.
"Our goalies have been rock-solid," Gulls captain Ryan Carpenter said. "They give us a chance to win each game. Calle's been excellent. I also think our team defense is improving at the moment, and we were more open today than we've been. There were some games where Calle didn't have too much action, and so it's a combination, really, of both. But when we give up something, they've got the answer. That certainly helps the group."
The Gulls and Wranglers will face off once again on Sunday, Dec. 21 at Scotiabank Saddledome at 1 p.m. PST to close out San Diego’s pre-Christmas road trip.
