The San Diego Gulls and Colorado Eagles are set to start the second half of their four-game series tonight at Blue Arena (6:05 p.m. PDT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
"It's not an easy place to play, but it's not the time of year where you really care about where," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "You're just excited to have the opportunity to compete against a great team, so we'll be looking forward to that."
San Diego and Colorado just wrapped up the first half of this series as they each took a game in their back-to-back series last weekend at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The Eagles took the first game 6-3 after the Gulls let up momentum in the third period. The Gulls came back and took the second contest 2-1 as Tristan Luneau and Nikita Nesterenko each found the back of the net. Tomas Suchanek put up an impressive performance in the crease to secure the win, only allowing one goal from 29 shots.
"It was really a playoff effort," Luneau said. "We talked about it a lot in the room, just showing up every game like it's the playoffs and getting ready for that. Those are opportunities and I feel like we did that."
The Gulls took their first road win against Colorado since 2022 back in January. After last weekend, the Gulls are 17-25-1-0 against the Eagles, including a 6-13-0-1 record on the road. Saturday’s win proved the Gulls can defeat highly ranked teams and they look to build on that momentum this weekend.
"Going to try to build on that performance," Luneau said. "Clean up some things in our game and just be ready for two big battles."
Playoffs are the topic on every team’s mind currently. Following Friday’s loss and Saturday’s win the Gulls stand in seventh place in the Pacific Division, the final qualifying playoff spot. The team was previously tied for sixth place with the Henderson Silver Knights who are on a four-game winning streak and now stand two points above San Diego. The Silver Knights also compete tonight but sit idle tomorrow night, giving the Gulls a chance to catch up.
After this series concludes tomorrow, the Gulls will head back home for a single contest against the Bakersfield Condors at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PDT).
