The San Diego Gulls will reunite with the Henderson Silver Knights tonight for game one of a three-game series starting at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
The Gulls’ record against the Silver Knights stands at 1-2-1-0 in the four games they have already met this season. The last faceoff between the teams was on Nov. 5 when San Diego took a 6-3 win, ending Henderson’s seven game winning streak.
Henderson has since fallen to eighth place in the Pacific Division with a current record of 11-9-1-0 with 23 points. San Diego stands one slot above Henderson, ranking seventh in the Pacific with a 9-6-6-0 record and 24 points. Henderson and San Diego are both coming off wins from Wednesday.
"Henderson is a strong team," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "They’re so good in transition and they’ve got so much speed on the rush. They’re one of the top breakout teams in the league right now. It’s an opponent that we’ve seen quite a bit this season already. We’re very familiar with them and we know we’re going to have our hands full, but we’ll be excited to play them."
The Gulls extended their win streak to two in their 3-1 win over the San Jose Barracuda last night. Calle Clang protected the net and has now only given up a combined two goals in back-to-back wins. Judd Caulfield recorded his second multi-goal game of the season with two goals netted. Justin Bailey also logged a goal, giving him five game winning goals in the season, good enough for second among all AHL skaters.
San Diego and Henderson will battle it out over the course of three games in five days. Following the series this weekend, the teams will head over to Lee’s Family Forum to complete game three on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
"We definitely owe Henderson a little bit," Cauldfield said. "We have struggled with them earlier in the season. We got one win against them. But yeah, we definitely owe them, and we know it's going to be a hard-fought game. They're a similar team to us. They like to play physical, and it's scrappy, so it's going to be fun games over at Pechanga, and we're excited for them."
The teams will be right back at Pechanga Arena tomorrow night for game two (6 p.m. PT).
