The San Diego Gulls are looking to log a third straight win as they face off with the Henderson Silver Knights tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
Henderson and San Diego last skated against each other in three consecutive games back in December. The Gulls took the first match, but Henderson followed with a shootout and regulation win. San Diego is 2-3-1-1 against Henderson in their seven games played and tonight will be the eighth and final time the teams see each other in the regular season.
The Silver Knights have posted a record of 7-9-3-1 on the road, with tonight marking their third game straight on away ice. The team dropped their last two matchups to the Texas Stars, leaving their total record at 18-15-5-2.
The Gulls will change their roster up a bit with the return of Sam Colangelo tonight. The forward will play his first AHL game since Jan. 14 where he left off with 7-9=16 points in 23 games played. The addition of Colangelo should add to the success the Gulls are coming off this past weekend when they took back-to-back victories over the Coachella Valley Firebirds and Ontario Reign. San Diego picked up five points in their past three contests, improving their total points to 49 with a record of 20-14-6-3.
"I feel like our season has had a lot of ups and downs, but we were grinding, and we're right there," Tyson Hinds said. "I think we can prove it to everybody. [Ontario is] first in the Pacific right now, and we proved it to everybody that we can win games against the top teams, because we believe that we are a top team and we have great talent on our roster and everything. We're confident, and we just need to keep going."
Multiple Gulls skaters saw individual success this past weekend. In Friday’s matchup with the Firebirds, Tomas Suchanek found his first AHL win of the season. This marks the goaltender’s first win since April 21, 2024 as he missed the entirety of last season with an ACL tear. Yegor Sidorov found his first multi-goal game of the season that same night. Sidorov ended the game with 2-1=3 points, with his second goal being the game-winner.
In Saturday’s game, Judd Caulfield logged three points and set a new single-season AHL high with his 12th goal of the season. Nathan Gaucher scored the game-winner with only 17 seconds remaining in the final period, marking the first game-winning goal of his AHL career. Calle Clang earned his 10th victory of the season, giving him a 10-3-2 record in his last 16 starts.
"We'll take all the momentum from all these games that we can," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "I think the key is you just kind of stay even keel, and we get an opportunity to rest and practice, which we haven't had in a bit, so we're already looking forward to the next game."
The Gulls will have some rest after tonight as the All-Star break kicks off this week. The team will return on Friday, Feb. 13 when they take on the Bakersfield Condors at Dignity Health Arena (7 p.m. PST).
