The San Diego Gulls fell just short of the San Jose Barracuda in a shootout loss tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 3-2.
The game was close throughout but was kept alive as Matthew Phillips buried the game-tying goal off a rebound with only 54 seconds remaining in the third period. San Jose had taken a short-lived lead just about five minutes prior. Gulls captain Ryan Carpenter picked up an assist which extended his point streak to 2-4=6 in five games while Tristan Luneau logged his sixth assist and 10th point of the season.
Yegor Sidorov ended a 14-game goal drought as he broke a tie early in the middle frame with help from Judd Caulfield and Nathan Gaucher. The goal gave the 21-year-old his 50th career AHL point and 7-9=16 points for the season.
Caulfield has found a new level of success this season. His assist on Sidorov’s goal extends his point count to 10-8=18, leaving him only seven points short of breaking his total last season.
This marked the Gulls second shootout of the season, which was brought to seven shots by each team. Justin Bailey and Sam Colangelo were both able to find the back of the net, but it was not enough to grab the extra point.
Calle Clang returned to the crease following his shutout on Dec. 28. Clang saw his second shootout of the season and saved 28 of 30 shots in regulation and OT.
The Gulls will next see the Colorado Eagles in a back-to-back weekend matchup starting on Friday, Jan. 9 at Blue Arena (6:05 p.m. PST).
