The San Diego Gulls got back on track Wednesday night at Pechanga Arena, defeating the San Jose Barracuda tonight 3-0 to snap a four-game skid.
"The guys showed a lot of character today," head coach Matt Mcllvane said. "We were strong in the first and when we weren't strong, we kind of bent, but didn't break. Our goaltender was excellent, and the third period had real strong elements of maturity."
Goaltender Ville Husso was the star of the game, logging his second shutout of the season. Husso now has four shutouts with San Diego, tying the Gulls AHL record for career shutouts. He now holds 17 total AHL career shutouts, ranking second among all active AHL goaltenders.
Yegor Sidorov opened the scoring in the first period with his second powerplay and overall goal of the season. This marks back-to-back goals for the forward who now has three points. Tim Washe got his second assist and Matthew Phillips logged his team-leading fifth.
Washe did not stay quiet for long as he buried his second career AHL goal in the middle frame. This also marked Washe’s first career multi-point AHL game, ending the night with 2-1=3 points. Phillips brought his assist lead up to six, his third multi-point game this season.
"We just wanted to stay with it," Washe said. "Our chances will come and I’m fortunate to be playing with some good players. They put the puck on my stick, so it was just kudos to them."
The action was not done yet for Washe as he scored on the empty net in the third period to bring the Gulls lead up to 3-0. This marked a two-goal and three-point game for the rookie, another first of his career. Nikolas Brouillard helped deliver the puck, marking his first point back with the Gulls. Noah Warren also got a touch on the puck, giving him his third assist this season.
Nathan Gaucher appeared in his first AHL game since March 8 tonight. Gaucher missed part of the back half of last season due to an upper-body injury and was out to start this season due to a lower-body injury.
The Gulls look to continue this power as they take on the Coachella Valley Firebirds tomorrow night at Acrisure Arena for their second matchup this season (6:30 PDT).
