The San Diego Gulls secured an essential win tonight as they shut out the Tucson Roadrunners at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 3-0.

Tonight’s win was important as the Roadrunners came into the night trailing the Gulls and the last playoff spot in the Pacific Division by only one point. Taking two points from Tucson gives San Diego a three-point cushion in their seventh-place spot.

Calle Clang added to his success this season, recording his third AHL career shutout as he stopped 27-of-27 shots. The goaltender now ties the record for most single-season shutouts in Gulls history.

"It was a big one," Clang said. "We haven't played these kinds of games in a long time. So, for us as a group, it was really important to get a strong start. I think we really did that. I thought, honestly, the whole team was phenomenal out there today, and it was a really good team effort."

Scoring was opened by Gulls defenseman Tyson Hinds early in the first period. The goal marks Hinds’ fifth of the season, a new single-season AHL career high. San Diego has now gone 21-6-5-2 when scoring first this season.

"Right from the start, we were putting pressure, putting puck deep and we played really good too defensively," Hinds said. "Our goalie was great when we needed him. Other than that, our defense was pretty, pretty tight."

Jan Mysak put the second one through, giving the Gulls some insurance. The goal marks Mysak’s first since January as he missed 14 games due to injury. The forward has logged 10-12=22 points in his 51 games played this season, posting a +2 rating.

The third goal was put in on the empty net by Nico Myatovic, who ended the night with two points to his name. The forward ended a 19-game point drought when he tallied an assist on Mysak’s goal and proceeded to end a 32-game goal drought with his empty netter.

An assistant was tallied by Tristan Luneau, Cal Burke, and Nikita Nesterenko. Luneau extended his point streak to five games with 1-6=7 found. Burke and Nesterenko both marked their fifth point in their past five contests. Burke has posted 2-3=5 while Nesterenko has posted 1-4=5.

The Gulls look to continue their momentum as they compete with the Bakersfield Condors on Friday, Apr. 3 at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PDT).

"I think every game is a big game, so next game is going to be huge too," Hinds said. "I think as long as we keep playing like tonight, and keep playing hard and the Gulls way, I feel like we can beat any team here and get ready for the playoffs, for sure."
