The San Diego Gulls fell to the Tucson Roadrunners in a shootout tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 4-3.
San Diego took a 3-0 lead early before Tucson responded with three themselves to tie the game up. After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game was sent to a shootout which went on to be the Gulls longest of the season so far with 10 shooters.
Calle Clang made his 17th start this season tonight, showing off his abilities in net. The goaltender saved 23-of-26 shots including six in overtime, which is tied for the most the team has seen during the extra frame this season.
Ryan Carpenter started the scoring early, finding the back of the net on the power play just three and a half minutes into the opening frame. The Gulls have been targeting improvement on their powerplay as they have not scored on the man-advantage in four games, making this goal essential.
Forward Matthew Phillips and defenseman Nikolas Brouillard picked up the early assists. Phillips holds the second most points of all Gulls skaters this season with 8-20=28 while Brouillard holds the second most of all Gulls defensemen with 1-13=14.
Yegor Sidorov gave San Diego a 2-0 lead in the first with help from Noah Warren and Judd Caulfield. Sidorov has logged 2-1=3 points in his last four games, bringing his season total to 10-10=20 points.
It was all smiles early in the second period as Coulson Pitre netted his first AHL goal of the season. Pitre now tallies four total AHL goals and 1-1=2 points in his 10 games played this season. Cal Burke was credited the primary assist, marking three points in four games. The forward recently broke a 17-game point drought and has been producing offensively ever since. Nico Myatovic was credited the secondary, bringing him to 5-5=10 points this season.
The Gulls will head back on the road this Friday, Jan. 30 as they take on the Coachella Valley Firebirds at Acrisure Arena (7 p.m. PST). The team will return right back home on Saturday, Jan. 31 to face off with the rival Ontario Reign at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PST).
