The San Diego Gulls fell short to the Texas Stars in overtime tonight at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park, 6-5.

Despite the loss, the Gulls still walk away tonight with a point. The team picked up three total of the series against Texas this weekend. Tonight saw a highly offensive game, with the Gulls and Stars staying close throughout the night.

Sam Colangelo got the Gulls going early, netting a powerplay goal to open the scoring just two minutes and four seconds into the first frame. The goal ended an eight-game point drought for Colangelo and marks his eighth total goal of the season. This also marks the forward’s fourth powerplay goal of the season, matching his total logged last season.

Defenseman Tyson Hinds found his first AHL career shorthanded goal on a four-man rush late in the first to give the Gulls their lead back. The goal marks Hinds’ third goal and San Diego’s eighth shorthanded goal this season.

After the Stars tied it back up in the second, the Gulls put up a pair of goals just 25 seconds apart. Nikolas Brouillard found the first with help from Nathan Gaucher and Judd Caulfield. Next Yegor Sidorov found the back of the net, getting it done unassisted for his 14th goal of the season.

Brouillard ended the night with two goals, netting the fifth for San Diego in the final frame to tie it up once again and send it to overtime. The defenseman holds three goals on the season with tonight being his first multi-goal game of the year. He has logged 2-1=3 points in the series against Texas this weekend.

Things got rowdy in the second as Roland McKeown dropped his gloves, going at it with Texas’ Sean Chisolm. Both players received five-minute fighting majors, extending the defenseman’s PIM to 38 this season.

Tomas Suchanek held it down between the pipes, saving 30-of-36 shots, the most he has seen so far this season.

Tristan Luneau ended the night with a pair of assists, one on Colangelo’s goal and one on Hinds’. Luneau now leads all Gulls defenseman in points with 4-16=20 logged this season.

Noah Warren and Cal Burke each tallied an assist tonight, marking one in each game of this back-to-back series for both players. Matthew Phillips and Ryan Carpenter also picked up an assist each tonight.

The Gulls will next head to San Jose on Wednesday, Mar. 4 to take on the Barracuda at Tech CU Arena before heading back home for a back-to-back series with the Rockford IceHogs starting Friday, Mar. 6 at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
