Ducks Recall Steel, Assign Gibbons to San Diego

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled center Sam Steel from the San Diego Gulls, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). In addition, the Ducks assigned left wing Brian Gibbons to San Diego.

Steel, 21 (2/3/98), has collected 1-2=3 points in 13 games with the Ducks this season. Selected by Anaheim in the first round (30th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft, Steel made his NHL debut on Oct. 3, 2018 at San Jose and scored his first career NHL goal on Oct. 21, 2018 vs. Buffalo.

A native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, the 5-11, 186-pound center earned 15-17=32 points in 43 games with San Diego this season. At the time of his recall, Steel ranked second among Gulls rookies in scoring, goals and assists.

Gibbons, 30 (2/26/88), recorded 2-3=5 points with 16 penalty minutes (PIM) in 44 games with the Ducks this season. Signed as a free agent on July 2, 2018, Gibbons has 19-34=53 points with a +9 rating and 50 PIM in 169 career NHL games with Anaheim, New Jersey, Columbus and Pittsburgh.
