The San Diego Gulls came just short of the Bakersfield Condors tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 5-4.
Despite the loss tonight, the Gulls put up a tough fight and stayed on the Condors' heels throughout the entirety of the game. San Diego outshot Bakersfield 30-26 and responded quickly to three of their goals.
Bakersfield got on the board first, but not long after San Diego responded. Justin Bailey put a slapshot through on the powerplay to tie the game back up. Bailey leads all Gulls skaters in goals this season with 16 logged.
San Diego kept the responses coming as Stian Solberg found the back of the net less than two minutes after Bakersfield netted their second. The defenseman now totals 6-6=12 points this season, more than double his total logged last season.
Judd Caulfield had himself a night as he recorded his third multi-goal game of the season. The winger responded with the third Gulls goal, putting the puck in just two minutes and 21 seconds after the Condors found their third. Caulfield went on to score the fourth goal as well, closing the score gap to just one goal early in the final frame. Caulfield has logged 4-3=7 points in his past five games, bringing his season total to 28 points.
Netminder Calle Clang made his first appearance since earning his CCM Top Goaltender honors at the AHL All-Star Classic, saving 21 shots.
Tim Washe, Yegor Sidorov, Roland McKeown, Sasha Pastujov, Nikolas Brouillard and Tristan Luneau picked up an assist each. Washe, Luneau, and Pastujov all hold points in back-to-back games. Nathan Gaucher tallied two assists tonight, finding 1-2=3 points in his past two games.
The Gulls will make their next appearance on Wednesday, Feb. 18 against the San Jose Barracuda at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PST).
