The San Diego Gulls couldn’t defend home ice from the dark side Saturday night as they dropped a close game 2-1 to the Henderson Silver Knights.

The Gulls came out strong, determined to make offensive momentum happen early as they teased some close shots around the net in the opening minutes of the first.

At 13:30, Henderson’s Gage Quinney struck to put the Silver Knights on top with the lone goal of the opening frame.

The middle frame saw San Diego pushing to close the one-goal gap but found themselves unable to lay the puck past Jiri Patera by the end of it.

To kick off the final frame, Sheldon Rempal gave the net its first new action since the first, as he added to the Silver Knights’ lead with a power-play goal at 4:27.

Moments after, Tyson Hinds launched the scoring for the Gulls as he fired in his second goal of the season, a long-range shot to bring San Diego within one at 4:47.

There was no letting off the gas for San Diego, who needed to tack on a single goal by the end of regulation to power them into an overtime opportunity with Henderson.

With five minutes remaining, a shot attempted by Olen Zellweger appeared promising but needed an extra push for it to reach the back of the net.

Drew Helleson (2-8=10) and Pavol Regenda (15-10=25) each tallied assists on Hinds’ goal.

Gulls goaltender Thomas Suchanek stopped all but two of 21 Henderson shots.

San Diego next gears up to face the Bakersfield Condors at Mechanics Bank Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 20 (6:30 p.m. PST).
