The San Diego Gulls fell short to the Ontario Reign tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 3-2.

The night opened the eight-game rivalry season series for the teams. After an action-packed game from the start, Ontario was able to walk away with the win. The teams will next meet on Nov. 24 back at Pechanga Arena.

San Diego was on the board first for their fifth consecutive game, with Matt Basgall finding the back of the net at 7:33 for his first goal and point of the season. The defenseman has totaled 2-1=3 points in his nine AHL appearances.

Ontario was able to find three in the middle frame, taking a two-goal lead that would last well into the third. Yegor Sidorov gave the Gulls a glimpse of hope, scoring his first goal of the season at 19:37 in the final frame. The goal was on the power play and marked the first goal San Diego has found on the man advantage since their season opener on Oct. 3.

Lucas Pettersson logged not only his first career AHL point, but also his first career AHL multi-point night. The forward tallied assists on both San Diego goals, marking his first points in eight AHL appearances. Anton Wahlberg extended his point streak to five games after tallying an assist on Basgall’s goal. Wahlberg has found 1-5=6 points in five games played this season, leading all Gulls skaters in points. Matthew Phillips also picked up an assist, bringing his season total to 2-2=4 points.

The rivalry was in full force tonight. Travis Mitchell dropped his gloves early in the first to go at it with Ontario’s Jared Woolley, each earning five-minute fighting penalties. Nathan Gaucher and Jacob Doty also got in on the action. The pair each earned a two-minute roughing minor early in the middle frame. It didn’t stop there as Jett Woo and Lane Pederson roughed it out late in the second, Woo earning a two-minute minor and Pederson earning a four-minute double minor. Ethan Procyszyn went on to receive a roughing minor as well, his first penalty minutes of the season.

Laurent Brossoit was between the pipes for the third time this season. The netminder saved 19-of-22 shots and now holds a record of 1-2-0 on the season.

San Diego looks for redemption this weekend as they head to Tucson for a back-to-back series with the Roadrunners at Tucson Convention Center Arena starting Friday, Oct. 16 (7 p.m. PDT).
