The San Diego Gulls couldn’t make sparks fly at Pechanga Arena San Diego Wednesday night as they came out on the wrong end of the battle in a 6-2 Valentine’s Day defeat to the San Jose Barracuda.

To launch the opening frame, San Diego was quick to put the pressure on San Jose as Olen Zellweger capitalized on the power play at 1:46, sending his tenth goal of the season (10-22=32) down the ice.

Things heated up when the Barracuda’s Ethan Cardwell responded with a goal at 9:42, evening the score.

With just over six seconds remaining in the first, San Jose stole the lead as Nathan Todd sent a shot past the San Diego goalie.

The middle frame began with another Barracuda goal, stretching their lead to two.

At 14:24, the puck floated in for Kyle Rau to tack on another one for San Jose.

With hearts set on extending their consecutive winning streak to four, San Diego entered the final frame determined to secure three goals to close the gap.

San Jose put a wrench in that plan and kicked off the scoring in the third with a goal by Jacob Peterson.

At 10:55, the Gulls fired back on the power play as Ben King showed the net some love, unloading his tenth goal of the season (10-9=19) to bring San Diego one goal closer.

Emotions continued to run high into the final minutes of regulation as a spat erupted between Nick Wolff and Roman Kinal.

At 17:15, Peterson cashed in on the empty net with his second goal of the night to add to San Jose’s lead.

The Gulls played some heartfelt hockey, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead from the Barracuda, handing San Diego the defeat.

Glenn Gawdin, Andrew Agozzino, Pavol Regenda, and Chase De Leo each tallied an assist on the night.

The Gulls will hit the rink with a comeback effort on Saturday, Feb. 17 as they square off with the Henderson Silver Knights on Star Wars Night at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PST).
