Gulls Late Rally Not Enough to Beat Barracuda

The San Diego Gulls fell to the San Jose Barracuda tonight after a late rally was not enough to take over the lead at Tech CU Arena, 3-2.
Tomas Suchanek took over in the crease early in the first period after Calle Clang made an early departure from the game. Suchanek faced 26 total shots, allowing only two through to keep San Diego in the game.
The Barracuda found three goals before the Gulls were able to put some pressure on in the third period. Tristan Luneau got San Diego on the board, logging his fifth this season and third point in his past two contests. Sasha Pastujov and Matthew Phillips picked up the assists, increasing their team-leading point counts.
San Jose’s lead was cut further as Tyson Hinds put a wrist shot through to the back of the net, leaving the Gulls down by only one. This marks the first time the defenseman has found goals in consecutive games this season as he netted a shorthanded goal in San Diego’s last contest. Assists on the goal were credited to forwards Judd Caulfield and Nathan Gaucher. The pair also have assists in consecutive contests as they combined to help out on a goal in their last game.
San Diego successfully killed off San Jose’s AHL leading powerplay tonight. The Barracuda had gone 3-for-6 in their past two games on the powerplay, but the Gulls proved the strength of their penalty kill and ended that momentum tonight.
Tonight concluded San Diego’s three-game road trip and they will now head back home for a back-to-back series with the Rockford IceHogs starting Friday, Mar. 6 at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PST).
