The San Diego Gulls and Abbotsford Canucks are set for the second contest of their back-to-back series today at Rogers Forum (4 p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
The meeting tonight marks the team’s sixth time competing so far this season. San Diego is 3-2-0-0 over Abbotsford so far and looks to increase that record today. The game will be San Diego’s 40th of the season. The team has posted a record of 18-13-6-2 with 44 points so far.
Last night Abbotsford took the win over San Diego, 3-1. The loss marked the Gulls’ first regulation loss in first games of back-to-backs making that record 8-1-2-0.
Yegor Sidorov scored the only goal for the Gulls, marking his ninth goal of the season and 19th total point. Calle Clang guarded the net in his third consecutive start, saving 22 of 20 shots against him. The Gulls went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill which brought their overall percentage to 85.1%, ranking them second in the league.
"I think overall after the first was a little bit better of a checking game, so we’re going to want to check well and check with our legs, stay out of the box and don’t give their power play opportunities and make a few adjustments," captain Ryan Carpenter said. "You try to learn from it and at the same time flush it as quick as you can. That’s the beauty of playing a back-to-back and we need this one tomorrow."
Abbotsford’s win brought them to a 14-22-3-3 record with 34 points, leaving them just five points short of climbing up a ranking in the Pacific Division. The team is now on a two-game winning streak which San Diego looks to break.
The Gulls will return to home ice at Pechanga Arena San Diego for their next matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 28 as they look to stay undefeated against the Tucson Roadrunners (7 p.m. PST).
