The San Diego Gulls began the unofficial second half of the AHL season tonight strong with a win over the Bakersfield Condors at Dignity Health Arena, 5-2.

The first period was full of action as the Gulls put up three. Captain Ryan Carpenter opened the scoring early with a shorthanded breakaway goal just 2:28 into the frame. Jan Mysak followed behind, finding some puck luck as he fought his way past goaltender Matt Tomkins. Justin Bailey then netted a powerplay goal to give the Gulls a 3-1 lead, bringing his goal total on the season up to 10. This marked Bailey’s sixth game winning goal this season, setting a Gulls AHL single season record.

San Diego extended their lead to 4-1 in the second as Stian Solberg found his fourth goal of the season. The defenseman now holds 4-4=8 points this year, three more points than his total last season.

The Gulls’ three-goal lead was restored by Nico Myatovic as he netted the fifth goal shorthanded on an empty net late in the third period. Myatovic broke a six-game goal drought and logged his fourth goal of the season. Carpenter picked up an assist, marking his second multi-point game this season.

Goaltender Ville Husso made another appearance, stopping 19 of 21 shots. The win brought his record up to 7-5-3 with a 0.908 save percentage.

The Gulls will get right back at it tomorrow night as they return to home ice at Pechanga Arena San Diego to face off with the Abbotsford Canucks (5 p.m.).
