The San Diego Gulls fell late to the Henderson Silver Knights in overtime tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego, 3-2.
Despite a close, hard-fought game, the Gulls could not find the back of the net first in the extra time tonight. The team still walks away with a point, bringing them to 10 total on the season.
Henderson found momentum early in the first, scoring twice less than two minutes apart. San Diego did not let that scare them, bouncing back with more momentum in the second to tie the game up. Swedish duo Herman Traff and Lucas Pettersson both found the back of the net just five minutes apart, marking each of their first career AHL goals. Traff’s goal came first, cutting Henderson’s lead in half. The 20-year-old has found 1-1=2 points, eight PIM and a +1 rating in 11 career AHL appearances. Pettersson tallied his sixth assist of the season on Traff’s goal and then went on to pick up his seventh point with a power play goal to tie the game.
Stian Solberg tallied assists on both Traff and Pettersson’s goals. Solberg has found a total 2-7=9 points this season and currently holds a career AHL high +5 rating. The 20-year-old leads all Gulls defensemen in points and ranks second amongst all Gulls skaters. Matthew Phillips also walked away with an assist, bringing him to 4-3=7 total points which ties him for third-most points by Gulls skaters this season.
Goaltender Damian Clara made his fourth start of the season. He faced a season-high 42 shots and stopped an AHL career high of 39 shots. He played a role in the Gulls’ perfect 3-for-3 penalty kill and made a huge impact on keeping the team in the game.
San Diego looks to regain momentum as they take on the Colorado Eagles tomorrow back at Pechanga Arena San Diego (5 p.m. PST).
