The San Diego Gulls will head into the Christmas break with a matchup against the Calgary Wranglers today at Scotiabank Saddledome (1p.m. PST; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
The Gulls and Wranglers battled it out on Friday night, with the Gulls taking the win in overtime 4-3. This win marked San Diego’s second overtime win of the season.
The game was full of action as the teams stayed neck and neck all game. Matthew Phillips put up two goals on the night, his first multi-goal game of the season. The right winger also picked up an assist, giving him three total points for the game. Jan Mysak netted one in the third to keep the Gulls alive and send the game into overtime. Defenseman Tristan Luneau found the overtime winner with just 28 seconds remaining.
"It's big. There's no secret that we've had our shortage of wins in overtime," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "It ends up being Tristan, who I thought had a fantastic game [on Friday], with the puck on his stick and makes a difference in the end."
San Diego put up multiple powerplay goals for the first time since November. The team has now accomplished that three times this season. The Gulls also went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, marking a successful game for special teams.
The Gulls will play some more hockey after Christmas when they take on the Bakersfield Condors on Dec. 27 at Dignity Health Arena (7 p.m. PST).
