The San Diego Gulls defeated the Calgary Wranglers 4-3 tonight at Scotiabank Saddledome for their second overtime win of the season.
Matthew Phillips recorded his first multi-goal game of the season with a goal in the first and second frames. He brought his team leading point record up to 6-17=23 after also picking up an assist in overtime.
The middle frame was action packed as San Diego tied a season-high 19 shots on goal put up in the second period. The Wranglers were able to net two just 35 seconds apart, giving them a lead following Phillips’ second goal which had tied it up.
The goals took away Calgary’s lead in the third when Jan Mysak scored for the Gulls’ second powerplay goal of the night. This marks the third time this season San Diego has scored multiple powerplay goals in one night, answering some of the offensive problems the team was seeing previously.
San Diego entered their ninth overtime game of the season, the fourth most played in the AHL. Tristan Luneau found the back of the net for the fourth time this season, giving the Gulls their second overtime win.
Goaltender Calle Clang was between the pipes again tonight, saving 25-of-28 shots for his fourth victory in five games. In that span, Clang is 4-1-0 with a 1.39 GAA and .944 SV%. He is second among AHL goaltenders in wins in the month of December.
The Gulls and Wranglers will meet up again on Sunday to close out their two-game weekend series at Scotiabank Saddledome (1 p.m. PT).
