The San Diego Gulls couldn’t finish it off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in overtime tonight, falling 4-3.

Coachella Valley scored first with two back-to-back goals just 11 seconds apart, but Matthew Phillips answered back to cut that lead in half with an unassisted goal, his second to reach the back of the net this season. This marks back-to-back games with multiple points from the forward.

The second period went scoreless for both San Diego and Coachella Valley.

Almost halfway through the third period, Justin Bailey logged his first point of the season on a breakaway goal, tying the game. Nico Myatovic was credited as the lone assist, his second this season.

Yegor Sidorov followed close behind, burying a one-timer to give the Gulls the lead. Phillips delivered the puck, giving him seven assists and bringing his team-leading point record up to nine. Captain Ryan Carpenter also got a piece of the action, giving him his second assist this season.

The Firebirds tied the game back up with five minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime before they were able to bounce one in off a Gulls defender to end the game in the extra frame.

Calle Clang made his second appearance in goal this season, stopping 18 shots.

The Gulls will next play a rematch against the Colorado Eagles at Pechanga Arena San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 1 (5 p.m. PST).
