The San Diego Gulls look to take back-to-back wins against the Colorado Eagles as they finish their weekend series tonight at Blue Arena (6:05 p.m. PST; TV: FloHockey on AHLTV; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
San Diego and Colorado battled it out in an intense game last night which resulted in a San Diego shootout win. The win marked the Gulls’ first win at Colorado in nine games played since 2022. It also marked the Gulls’ first shootout victory of the season. San Diego now holds a 6-0-2-0 record in their first game of back-to-back play this season and looks to improve their record of 2-2-2-1 in second games of back-to-backs tonight.
"That's a big focus for us for sure," Nathan Gaucher said on the win. "We want to challenge ourselves again amongst the best, and that's the best team in our conference as well. So, I think we were right up there with them, and it's a good challenge for us, and we answered today."
The Gulls have tied multiple games in the final minute of regulation this season. Last night, Justin Bailey netted the game-tying goal to keep the Gulls alive. Judd Caulfield was credited the game-winning-goal as he was the lone skater to successfully score in the shootout.
Gaucher hit a career milestone as he recorded his first career AHL multi-goal game. The forward found the net unassisted twice, with a shorthanded goal in the first period and another goal in the third. Nico Myatovic also found success as he scored a powerplay goal to give him a total of 5-4=9 points this season.
"We saw what gave us success tonight," Caulfield said. "When we were being physical and just not giving them any time and space we had a lot of success. But, when we kind of let them fly in with their speed, we know they have a lot of speed, we got to stay above that. When they had that speed, they kind of had the momentum for a bit, but we just stayed on top of them and stayed physical. I think that's our game, and we know that if we play that way, we were able to take these guys."
San Diego will have an upcoming three-game run at home starting on Wednesday, Jan. 14 as they take on the Abbotsford Canucks at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PST).
