A night of Halloween hockey lies ahead as the San Diego Gulls look to creep over the Henderson Silver Knights tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego (6 p.m. PDT; TV: AHLTV on FloHockey; Radio: Gulls Audio Network).
Henderson and San Diego last met on Oct. 10 when the Gulls completed a 2-0 shutout over the Silver Knights. The shutout was the first of goaltender Damian Clara’s AHL career, who has now posted a 2-0-1-0 record with a 2.28 GAA and .920 SV%. With an eight-game season series underway, the Gulls look to go up 2-0-0-0 tonight before they meet the Silver Knights again for a back-to-back series in Henderson Nov. 6-7.
Tonight will mark San Diego’s 10th contest of the season. The team has had a strong start, going 4-4-1-0 in their first nine games, giving them nine points. The Gulls have found an 82.1% success rate on the penalty kill and have the least amount of penalty minutes in the Pacific Division.
"I think just the camaraderie, we’re having a lot of fun right now," Jett Woo said. "We meshed pretty early on in training camp and that doesn’t happen a lot with some teams. It’s fun to be a part of, I know this is my first year, but I feel like I’ve been here for quite a while now. The guys are great, the coaches have been great, so hopefully we keep going up."
The Gulls have been led by Anton Wahlberg in points as he has logged 1-9=10 with a +5 rating. Nico Myatovic and Stian Solberg follow closely behind with Myatovic collecting 5-2=7 points with a +1 rating and 6 PIM while Solberg has tallied 2-5=7 points with a +5 rating and 12 PIM.
San Diego has had some time to rest, last competing a week ago on Saturday, Oct. 24 in a matchup with the San Jose Barracuda. The Gulls took the game 4-1 with two goals from James Hamblin, as well as tallies from Corey Schueneman and Myatovic. Laurent Brossoit put on an impressive performance in the crease, stopping 28-of-29 shots. The team put up a season-high 37 shots on goal and broke through on special teams, going 1-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
"Anytime you win it's good," head coach Dave Manson said. "Our guys played well. We bent a little, but we didn’t break. I think we got a good team on back-to-backs, and we did what we had to do. We had to come out and play hard and find a way to get a win."
Tonight’s contest is the first game of back-to-back contests for the Gulls. San Diego will host the Colorado Eagles to end their four-game homestand tomorrow night right back at Pechanga Arena San Diego (5 p.m. PST).
