The San Diego Gulls defeated the San Jose Barracuda tonight at Tech CU Arena, 3-1.
Goaltender Calle Clang put on another great performance in net tonight, saving 32 of 33 shots. Clang has given up a combined two goals in back-to-back wins following his return to the ice.
Judd Caulfield recorded his fourth multi-point and second multi-goal game of the season tonight. The right winger netted the first goal of the game along with an empty netter late in the third period. Ryan Carpenter picked up his 10th assist on the season while Sam Colangelo picked up his first.
"I thought it was just we showed great maturity from the team throughout the game, because they definitely had pushes at the start of the first and throughout the second period there, but I thought we handled those extremely well," Caulfield said. "We gave up a few good chances, but [Calle Clang] is there to shut them down. So that was great to see. He's been lights out for us since coming back. And yeah, it's just fun to see him do so well."
Justin Bailey also found the back of the net next with the help of Sasha Pastujov to start off the second frame. The goal ended a six-game goal drought and marks the right wingers fifth game winning goal this season.
The San Jose and San Diego rivalry was apparent throughout the game as Nathan Gaucher and Noah Warren both dropped the gloves, while Pastujov and Jan Mysak earned roughing penalties.
"San Jose is a good team," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "Coming into this game they were the hottest in our division. We knew they were coming off of a loss, and we knew there was going to be a big push. To be able to start like we did and get on the board first, that’s big. Really fast start in the second period, I think our second period was a little slow from there until we got the big fights with Nathan [Gaucher] and Noah [Warren] stepping up for the team. It really rallied everybody. It was a gutty and gritty third period. To be able to keep the one on the board and close the door, it’s a big win for us."
The Gulls will face off with the Henderson Silver Knights in a back-to-back weekend series starting Friday Dec. 12 at Pechanga Arena San Diego (7 p.m. PT).
