The San Diego Gulls redeemed themselves against the Texas Stars tonight, taking a 5-1 win at Pechanga Arena.
Goaltender Calle Clang shined tonight, recording his first win this season in his first appearance since November 8, saving 18-of-19 shots.
"[Calle] was unbelievable tonight," Sasha Pastujov said. "Especially earlier where he wasn't seeing many shots, but they were high quality. If one of those goes in, it might hurt us a little bit, but he stood so tall. He should be so happy about how he played tonight. When you see Clanger kicking like that, it sends a message to the team, we're in good hands tonight."
Jan Mysak lit the lamp first late in the opening frame, logging his fourth of the season and giving the Gulls a one goal lead which would last until the third period.
San Diego capitalized on the powerplay in the final frame when Tim Washe found the net to increase the Gulls’ lead to two. The rookie then recorded his third multi-goal game this season after scoring on an empty net later in the frame. He is currently tied for fourth place for most AHL goals by a rookie this season with 10.
Pastujov joined the fun, logging both an assist and goal which ties him at the top of Gulls leading scorers at (6-11=17) points.
Justin Bailey also logged a two-point night after picking up an assist on both Mysak and Washe’s goals. This marks the right wingers second multi-assist game and fourth multi-point game this season.
To finalize the score at 5-1, Nico Myatovic broke a nine-game goal drought with the help of Matthew Phillips.
"We did a lot of good things on Friday night," head coach Matt McIlvane said. "As far as where we left ourselves in Coachella, where we felt like there were a lot of empty holes, we had most of the boxes checked, and then today, we were able to capitalize, and that might be the most complete game we've played this year."
San Diego will hit the road to take on the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday, Dec. 10 before returning to home ice next weekend to match up with the Henderson Silver Knights in a back-to-back weekend series.
